Alternator Installation Guidelines
1. Disconnect Battery ground cable and note position of all wires connected to Alternator.
Identify wires so they can be reconnected to the same terminals. Disconnect wires before
removing Alternator.
2. Loosen alternator drive belt(s) and remove from pulley. Remove alternator-mounting bolts
and retain for installation. Remove alternator.
3. Clean wire terminals so that bare metal is present for a good connection.
4. Remove fan and pulley from original alternator; inspect them to determine if they can be
returned to service.
5. Install fan and pulley on replacement alternator, torque pulley nut to manufacturers spec.
6. Place alternator in proper place and install bolts. If vehicle has a belt tensioner, tighten
bolts according to manufactures spec and install belt(s) and tighten to proper belt tension.
If the alternator is the belt tensioner install belt(s) and tighten belt(s) by prying against the
drive end frame of the alternator (Note: Damage can be done to the alternator if prying is
done against the stator, the use of a wood block is recommended to prevent damage to the
alternator) torque alternator mounting bolts to manufacturers spec. DO NOT
OVERTIGHTEN BELT(S)!
7. Connect alternator wires.
8. Perform battery load tests; verify battery(s) are acceptable for service. Charge battery(s) if
necessary.
9. Clean battery ground terminal and battery terminal. Clean all other battery terminals and
cable terminals. Reconnect battery cables, connecting ground terminal last.
10. Perform operational check of alternator.
Note: After installation, periodically check for any loose or corroded terminals or cables. Often
times, what appears to be a defective alternator is nothing more than a problem with
connections.
